What to Wear for Fall Photos

Fall is hands down one of the best seasons for photos. The light is dreamy, the air is crisp, and the colors are just gorgeous. One of the questions I get asked the most before a session is: “What should we wear?”
The right outfits can really make your photos pop and help you feel confident in front of the camera. Here are my go-to tips for picking outfits for fall photos.
1. Coordinate, Don’t Match
Instead of everyone wearing the exact same thing (like all jeans and white shirts), go for a color palette that works together. Pick 2 or 3 colors and mix them throughout your outfits. This keeps things looking natural while still pulled together.
Some great palettes for fall are:
Neutrals with a pop of warm color (cream, tan, rust, mustard)
Earth tones (olive, camel, burgundy, navy)
Jewel tones (emerald, deep plum, sapphire)

2. Play with Texture
Fall is the season for cozy textures that look amazing in photos. Think chunky knit sweaters, flowy dresses with boots, corduroy, denim, or a cute wool hat. These little details add depth and pair perfectly with the natural background of leaves and tall grass.

3. Layer It Up
Layers not only keep you warm, but they make outfits so much more interesting. A cardigan, jacket, or scarf can completely change the look of an outfit. Plus, they give us fun posing options like holding your jacket over your shoulder or wrapping up in a scarf.
4. Dress for the Location
If we’re in the woods with a lot of fall leaves, choose colors that stand out like navy or cream. If your photos are in a downtown or urban setting, sleek neutrals look great against brick or concrete.

5. Don’t Forget Shoes
Shoes make a big difference! Since we’ll probably walk on grass, dirt, or uneven ground, go for something practical but stylish. Ankle boots, loafers, or neutral sneakers are perfect. I’d skip bright athletic shoes unless they’re meant to be part of the look.

6. Comfort is Key
If you’re comfortable, it shows. Skip anything too tight or fussy that you’ll be tugging on the whole time. For kids, softer fabrics and clothes they can move around in work best. Happy, comfy kids = happy photos.
7. Add a Personal Touch
The best photos always include little pieces of your personality. Bring your favorite hat, a fun scarf, earrings you love, or even a cozy blanket to wrap up in. These touches make your photos feel like you.
Tip: Lay everyone’s outfits out together before your session. Seeing them side by side will help you catch anything that doesn’t fit the vibe and make sure the colors flow nicely.

Fall photos are all about warmth, connection, and soaking in this gorgeous season. With the right outfits, your photos will feel timeless, cozy, and full of joy.
